Outreach.
Here, a SciOly "doer" is using the written instructions of her teammate to reconstruct the original model I presented to the "writers" in the event Write It-Do It.
Since I was a student teacher at Hamilton Middle School in 2012, I have coached for their middle school Science Olympiad team in Bio Process Lab, Anatomy, or Write-It Do-It. Led by Lori Vogel and Dr. Bart Wakker, Hamilton’s middle school SciOly team has finished in 1st place at the state competition for the past ten years!
An activity1 designed to provoke conversation about identity, which I used during a facilitated workshop for a group of high school students.
In collaboration with Upwind Ultimate, I co-facilitated an equity workshop with Kaitlynne Roling for over 100 ultimate players representing more than a dozen local teams.
Many of the spaces I operate in are not demographically representative of the broader community. And, even when they are statistically representative, the experiences of people of color, LGBT folks, and/or women are often notably less positive (generally speaking) compared to hetero, cis, male, and/or white folks. I believe that it’s important to have conversations about how we can make participating and succeeding in science and sport more equitable.
Spirit circles are one way ultimate players re-group after a practice or game to reflect on our collective spirit and our interactions. Here, a group of high school girls and boys I coach give each other shout-outs after a pickup game.
I believe that empowered women can be role models for young people of all identities, and that the skills kids learn in sports go beyond the boundaries of the playing field. I coach ultimate frisbee and soccer for youth teams in the Madison area. Since 2009, I've worked with elementary, middle, and high school boys and girls teams, U-17 boys Club Championship, and U-20 Club Championship Mixed teams as a coach and/or equity liaison.
